FROSTY....BUSY FEEDERS!!

Richelle Hunter

Many birds have continued to find their food in the wild so feeders might not have been as busy during the month of October as you might have expected....until now!  We had a much cooler day yesterday and frost this morning. The result? LOTS of birds visiting the feeders!!

AMAZING OCTOBER WEATHER...WITH GREAT SIGHTINGS!

Richelle Hunter

Our summer weather in October has continued with a simply outstanding weekend of warm temperatures and great sightings!  Red-winged Blackbirds have been filling the trees, sightings of White-throated Sparrows, Eastern Bluebirds & others continue, while the amazing displays in the sky at sunset and sunrise would knock your socks off!  The leaf colour hasn't been the greatest but there are some good spots one can find! Enjoy your week!!

JUNCOS NOW IN OUR GARDEN!

Richelle Hunter

Some folks reported Juncos in their gardens a week or so ago...we finally have them in ours as of yesterday, Thursday, Oct. 19!! This morning there are a few more providing some great entertainment as they chase each other through the yard. They are wonderful visitors around the feeders, often referred to as the "snowbird"!!

A FEW COOLER DAYS...PLAID IS IN!

Richelle Hunter

Temperatures this fall have been on a bit more of a roller coaster than usual and it looks as though the trend may continue for a bit yet! It is often difficult to know what to wear on a cooler morning, especially if the temperatures are fairly mild later on in the day.  As well, whether you are spending time around a campfire, in a hockey rink, or running out for groceries, these ponchos/wraps/capes might prove to be the perfect solution for a simple, extra layer! Other items also available!

JUNCOS ARE HERE!!

Richelle Hunter

We have had reports of Juncos in our area....yesterday and this past Saturday!  When these lovely birds return to our area from their nesting grounds further north, we know it is a sure sign that the seasons are changing or will be changing. Juncos are often seen below feeders or on the forest floor, but are also regular visitors to feeders throughout the fall & winter season with one of their favourite seeds being White Millet. If you didn't know, Dark-eyed Juncos are one of the most common birds throughout North America...and a feeder favourite of so many!!

HAWK CLIFF WEEKENDS

Richelle Hunter

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hawk Cliff this past weekend - the Monarch and Raptor presentations were excellent! All attendees were delighted to learn about the life cycle and stages of the Monarchs, then were treated to tagging and release demonstrations...how special!! Following this, we were introduced to an American Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk and Northern Harrier. Once the presentation and question/answer segment concluded, many took advantage of closeup photo opportunities then also saw the birds released! The event continues this coming Saturday & Sunday!

DOWNY WOODPECKER FUN

Richelle Hunter

You just never know what the birds in the garden might be up to until you take a wander around. Last week, we noticed some movement in one of our birdhouses. Somebody was inside and occasionally sticking their head out the entrance hole. Figuring it was probably a House Sparrow, when we investigated further, we were quite surprised to see a cute Downy Woodpecker providing the entertainment!  It was definitely a fun surprise on a September day!

HUMMINGBIRDS CONTINUE TO DELIGHT!

Richelle Hunter

While we are experiencing cooler than normal temperatures in this area and throughout the province, the Hummingbirds continue to visit the nectar feeders and the flowers around the garden. Some bring a smile just by perching & preening! Please keep feeders cleaned & filled for some time yet....some Hummingbirds may have moved on, some are still hanging around and others that nested further north will continue to travel through our area. The Hummingbirdswill appreciate the nourishment that your nectar feeders will provide as they prepare for the long journey south.  These tiny miracles never cease to amaze and entertain...enjoy them while they are here!!
