FLEDGLINGS AROUND THE GARDEN!

Richelle Hunter

As birds fledge, you will be noticing more squawking, chirping, calling, tweeting around your yard & garden and also around your feeders! It’s one of the best times of the year for feeding the birds! Many of these fledglings will be spotted on the ground, in trees & shrubs or out in the open. Never fear….parents are usually near by & will be bringing food fairly often. Leave these birds be! We’ve already had Downys, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and House Finches at or near our feeders…..so much fun!

MISSING 'YOUR' ORIOLES?

Richelle Hunter

We have had some inquiries about Orioles….where are they? All through spring migration, so many people told us that they had never seen so many Orioles in their gardens & around their feeders! Now…not so much, some not seeing them around at all! We thought this would be a perfect time to address this since folks have asked!

The fact of the matter is, the Orioles are around, you may hear them, you may have a brief visit to your feeders, but they are now busy….with their nests/nestlings! Yes, they do nest in this area should the habitat be favourable. As their young grow, the adults will be searching out & feeding them insects. (this video from June 15 2018)

Also ~ More info - Click here

If they did nest in your area, don’t be surprised if, in a very short time, you have even more Orioles around your feeders! While you may now want to decrease the food offerings a bit so that you don’t waste or offer spoiled food, at the very least, keep your nectar feeders going! Hummingbirds are around, along with some Orioles….you’ll want them to know they can count on you when needed or when their nestlings fledge, along with prior to their migration south, later in the summer/early fall!

Update - afternoon of June 13 - A few more Oriole sightings around our feeders than there have been in recent days! (Photo below from a previous year, taken on July 8th, close to our feeders)

Photo from a previous year, taken on July 8th - it won’t be long until the Oriole families show up around your feeders if they have been nesting nearby!

SO MANY ORIOLES!!

Richelle Hunter

Many folks are reporting more Orioles in their gardens & around their feeders than ever before!! It’s a very busy time of the year & we are trying to keep our shelves filled, but it has been difficult! Many are enjoying orioles not only at their nectar & fruit feeders, but also around their peanut, suet & even safflower feeders….it’s been a pretty amazing spring! Thanks everyone for all of your support this season & throughout the year!
