Temperatures are comfortable…Monarchs are in the air & on the move….Fall Migration is well underway….Fall colours will soon arrive…..Fall fairs have begun and will continue for several weeks! So much fun in the month of September!!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Labour Day! Feeders busy with Orioles & Hummingbirds!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Labour Day Holiday weekend!
Cooler summer nights and days are just around the corner….we have already experienced some! Despite the temperatures, many outdoor events continue well in to the fall. If you’re looking to add an easy layer for warmth, we have many blanket scarves, wraps, ponchos and pashminas from which to choose!
If you follow us on facebook, you may have seen some photos and/or videos of a hesitant Tree Swallow. He did eventually leave the nest, but it took about two days! If was so much fun this week to hear their familiar chatter and watch the happenings in this tree as they seemed to take their turns at flying around….we hadn’t seen any of them for a number of days!
It seems like quite a while since we have seen any bunnies around our garden….until the last few nights! It’s always fun to watch these cuties….unless you have a veggie garden or flowers that they love!
When we think of August, we think of the buzz of the Cicada, warm nights, sometimes cooler nights with warmer days continuing. This year has been no exception with the heat & humidity once again upon us! Relief will come and we may wish that it hadn’t….in the meantime, enjoy everything August has to offer including more fabulous sunsets!
The summer months always seem to go so very fast….how can this be July 31st!? There’s been some very warm days and lots of rain in some areas. If you have standing water in your garden, including bird baths, remember to freshen the baths often. The birds & critters will appreciate the cool, fresh water that you are providing on these very warm days!. Water that may be ‘standing’ in something in your garden needs to be removed/drained….you don’t want to provide a mosquito haven in your yard.
Find a place in the shade & take it easy in this heat!
Here in SW Ontario, and many other areas around the country, the heat & humidity are going to continue once again this week! It is more important than ever to keep your nectar feeders clean & fresh. We have been adding about a cup of fresh nectar each day, cleaning and rinsing them out each morning before refilling them. There seems to be enough birds enjoying them that there is hardly any nectar left when we do wash & refill them! We have placed our nectar feeders in the shade….it must certainly help them to stay a little cooler & fresher during these hot summer days!! Some great info for cleaning your nectar feeders that we recently shared on fb - click here.
Don’t forget your bird baths, water dishes….keep them clean & filled with fresh water….often!
If the Oriole families have not yet arrived at your feeders, they are about to!! We’ve had them squawking from the trees in their nesting area, then closer to where our feeders are located. In the past couple of days, they have discovered our feeders and are being fed at or very near!! It is another of the most wonderful times of the year….enjoy!
Some birds, or even many birds, don’t pick the greatest spots to place their nests. Branches may be weak, breaking during a storm; nests often are knocked out of trees by weather, wind or predators. Still others nest on or near the ground, making them very vulnerable! If the species is one that prefers a cavity, you can lend a hand by placing birdhouses in your yard & adding a baffle along with a predator guard around the entrance hole. Click here for more info about nesting birds! Thanks to Cornell Lab for always great info!

With the heat & humidity continuing, a cool spot & fresh water for all is so very important!
Happy July everyone ~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA! More blooms & blossoms around the garden; more arrivals at the feeders! Some of our feathered friends are nesting for the 2nd time (or even 3rd)….the enjoyment around the bird feeders & around the garden continues!
Wishing everyone a very happy Canada Day holiday weekend!
With the heat & humidity finally arriving, just a reminder to refresh bird baths often, clean & refill (or just partially fill) nectar feeders often, place feeders of every kind in the shade, if at all possible!
Are you ready to celebrate Canada’s birthday? We are!!
They squeak, they squawk….they let mom or dad know where they are! It’s a fabulous time of the year to welcome birds to your garden as adults bring their families, first, to the area around your feeders and eventually to the feeders! Wonderful & so very much fun! Sometimes the little ones end up where you least expect….like this Downy Woodpecker!
It’s so very important to clean all feeders…often….through all seasons of the year! With warmer weather upon us, it is more important than ever! Make certain to clean them at least once a week, for the good health of all of your backyard birds! Not only do nectar feeders need to be kept clean, seed feeders do as well.
