We've said goodbye to January and now welcome February...with a little sunshine & warmer temperatures....for a few days! It's time to think spring & register for the Huron Fringe Birding Festival....a fabulous event in a beautiful spot! Tonight, you can join Nature London & London Library as they present "Get starry-eyed on a winter’s night"!!
This is tonight's presentation thanks to Nature London & London Library!! If you're interested in attending this event, it will be offered at Wolf Performance Hall, Central Library in London, Ontario from 7 - 8:30pm!!
We've often noticed that our feeders become very busy just prior to a change in the weather....the birds seem to know that snow, rain, cold, etc. are coming soon!! They really are truly amazing creatures! Find out more at the presentation this evening!!
Yesterday was one of those special, winter days that we were delighted to welcome....a special day for capturing a few photos of the beautiful Cardinals. Delicate snowflakes floated gently to the ground as the Cardinals, males & females, gathered round....in our shrubs & at our feeders. They posed as if to say "Take a photo, this is the perfect day to capture the essence of a wintry day!" If you'd like to report on bird scenes & sightings in your garden, become a citizen scientist & consider signing up for the Great Backyard Bird Count....coming up in February!!

We've recently had many gray, snowy days, so we thought it would be fun to think about the colours that will grace our gardens before we know it!! A favourite of so very many in this area is the Baltimore Oriole. Their rich colours & their glorious sounds always bring a smile. Whether you offer nectar feeders, jelly feeders, fresh fruit....or all three....the entertainment when they arrive & dine is simply the best!! Enjoy this January day, this Penguin Awareness Day....we hope one of our favourite spring & summertime birds brings a smile!!
While many may not be fans of the snow, colder temperatures and strong winds....all these common elements of a Canadian winter certainly bring the beautiful birds to the feeders. Yesterday was no exception! With school buses cancelled in some areas & blowing snow an unfavourable condition of the day, the Cardinals & others were putting on a show in and around our bird feeders. We observed three male Cardinals & one female, although other females may have been present ~ They seem to usually arrive in pairs. The entertainment was fabulous as the birds battled the snow & wind but enjoyed spots in the weigela shrub next to our home...the views amazing as they took cover with others that included American Tree Sparrows & Juncos. Also visiting the feeders yesterday were House Finches, Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Goldfinches, Chickadees, Doves...a great day all round!

Yes, it's winter....colder temperatures & additional snow have arrived! We hope that you are looking after everyone, including your pets, limiting the time these furry family members spend out doors. If you are cold, they are cold. Please also take a moment to give the birds a hand. If you have feeders in your garden, keep them filled and make certain seed ports are free & clear of ice or snow. The less energy the birds use to get the food that they require, the more energy they will have to keep themselves protected from the cold! As well, clear snow from below your feeders. The birds that feed from the ground will be able to find the seed more easily. If you still have greenery or a real tree hanging around, place them below or near your feeders. The birds will appreciate the protection provided....from the wind, snow, cold & predators.

We've been pretty lucky so far this winter....at least in S. W. Ontario! We haven't had much snow and the temperatures have been above normal...until now! Colder weather & a little snow have certainly brought lots of birds to our feeders and have provided for some great entertainment today! Cardinals, Chickadees, Juncos, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Goldfinches, House Finches, Doves, American Tree Sparrows and others have all been frequent visitors and we are loving every minute. We've shared many photos all year long, it's very difficult to pick a favourite. It's always pretty special to welcome all birds to our garden & love when certain ones arrive. Once again this year, the Indigo Buntings made an appearance, so today we'll share a photo of one of them!

How could anyone not love a Cardinal? Their spectacular colour....in the evergreens, in the snow, in the sunset, on a branch...is like the ornaments on a tree, the jewels on a crown!! A Cardinal's tune is amazing and so recognizable...be sure to listen for it, especially loud in the early spring & summer. They'll bring a smile to one's face & joy to the heart!

It's the very first day of December and it is also GIVING TUESDAY!! We are delighted with the so very meaningful items that have just arrived!! The good folks at Swift Care Ontario have been busy in their workshop crafting these handmade Monarch Butterfly ornaments. Designed in fused glass, the ornaments are stunning....a gift that would mean so much....a reminder of all that's good in this world!! What could be more fitting for anyone on your list this gift-giving season!
Wow...hard to believe we've reached the last day of November 2015! We're welcoming this November 30th with some lovely sunshine & frosty trees...a stunning start to the day. We've enjoyed many pretty birds at the feeders this month, not too many more fun to watch than the Red-bellied Woodpeckers!! Hoping December keeps them coming...have a fabulous day!!

It's truly amazing to have the beautiful birds visiting the garden and the bird feeders! Add a little snow and some cooler temperatures....you never know who might show up! This past week, the ground was covered with snow and the evening lows below zero celsius. We were rewarded with several beauties and many feeder visits....outdoor entertainment can't get much better than that during autumn in Canada!
